Beyond baseball caps, neckties and satin jackets, a Kill Bill katana letter opener, knee hi stockings promoting Jaws, and a set of Being John Malkovich matryoshka dolls are amongst the zanier ephemera that studios once dreamed would make a film tangible in its viewers hands. Each object is photographed with the kind of reverence usually reserved for art pieces, tracing Hollywood’s willingness to go wild with giveaway culture, mapping the exuberant rise of cinema merch as its own lived aesthetic where consumer kitsch becomes cultural artefact.
