Up To And Including Her Limits
1st Edition, 1994
The New Museum of Contemporary Art
Published on the occasion of the first museum exhibition devoted to Carolee Schneemann, surveying four decades of her work in the United States. Graduating from her early paintings, Schneeman’s emergence into the New York performance scene of the 1960s saw her as “a painter who has in effect enlarged her canvas”. Orchestrating performances where her body was explored as both a source of knowledge and experience, and an artistic medium, Schneemann became a radical force in challenging representations of women’s bodies in art and wider culture. Reconfigured as mixed media installations consisting of notes, scores, photographic and video documentation, the artist’s seminal performances Meat Joy (1964), Up To And Including Her Limits (1973), and Interior Scroll (1975) were included in the exhibition.
