Myles, as a cult queer figure and literary hero – who once also ran for president in the early ’90s – first published their debut collection of six short stories in 1986, capturing a vivid, singular portrait of their youth spent in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Part-autobiography, these stories explore themes of queerness and working class identity with all the incisiveness of Myles’ 1994 autobiographical book Chelsea Girls, which features some of the writing you’ll find in Bread and Water.
