Japanese photographer Hajime Sawatari fell in love with the Italian fashion model Nadia Gulli while shooting her for an advertisement back in 1971. Released two years later, Nadia is the result of a highly intimate photographic project, where Sawatari captured the Italian model exclusively in black and white around Karuizawa, Tokyo and Venice and other Italian regions nearly every day for a year as they embarked upon a romantic relationship. A leading work of postwar Japanese photography, in Nadia Sawatari established his unique style of “capturing a woman in a back-and-forth between reality and fiction.”
