Growing up in an industrial toxic landscape next door to a factory in Braddock, Pennsylvania, much of LaToya Ruby Frazier’s work looks inwards, examining and interrogating environmental racism, healthcare and bigger issues of class in America. In this large-scale book, published to accompany her exhibition at Mudam Luxembourg in 2019, three of her most important bodies of works are brought together: The Notion of Family (2001–14), On the Making of Steel Genesis: Sandra Gould Ford (2017) and And From the Coaltips a Tree Will Rise (2016–17). Combining a documentary approach with a deeply personal experience, each of these works interrogate the relationship between individual lives and social, historical, political and economic issues.
