Exhibition catalogue for Mike Kelley’s Three Projects: Half a Man, From My Institution to Yours, Pay For Your Pleasure presented at the The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago in 1988. The three bodies of work came together for the first time and included: Pay For Your Pleasure, a new installation conceived for the show exploring the twisted celebrity of American serial killer John Wayne Gacy through a series of banners and a single painting by Gacy, made while in prison. Half a Man addressed the predominantly effeminate traditions of art-making in the church and the home, and consists of felt banners, stuffed animals and afghan assemblages, and “decorated” dressers. Whilst From My Institution To Yours, saw Kelley borrow several of the authorless drawings (usually crudely drawn, and containing equally crude or infantile jokes) which circulate as xeroxes and nearly totally permeate the loading docks, offices, and bulletin boards of America.
