The debut book from Brooklyn-based photographer Miranda Barnes dedicated to the tradition of Black cotillions in the United States. Once the preserve of white European aristocracy, the debutante ball was reimagined by African American communities in the late nineteenth century as a framework for education, mentorship, and social upliftment. Social Season traces this lineage through a series of photographs taken at debutante balls in Detroit between 2022 and 2025. Moving between the spectacle of the ballroom and quiet preparation, Barnes captures young women and their escorts anticipating their futures in this delicate threshold where tradition, performance, and youth converge beneath chandeliers and opulent mouldings. Commissioned by Sofia Coppola, the volume also includes a text by Dr. Renita Barge Clark, founder of The Cotillion Society of Detroit Educational Foundation, who reflects on the history of the programme and its ongoing role within the community.
