Vinca Petersen’s cult 1999 photo book No System was reissued in 2020. Described modestly by Petersen as a ‘family photo album,’ No System documents the British photographer’s decade-long journey through Europe attending and putting on illegal raves and festivals during the 1990s. Over 200 photographs, diary entries and ephemera portray an alternative, nomadic way of life – people gathered around campfires, raving, living out of vans, or waking up next to the sea. ‘We are not rebelling against, so much as living outside the system. Free music to anyone that wants it is what we give and we need nothing back but space to roam,’ she writes. Petersen’s friend, mentor and fellow photographer Corinne Day suggested in the late 1990s that she show her photographs to Michael Mack (founder of Mack Books) to get them published; the book ended up being published by Steidl, which made Petersen the youngest female artist to ever work with the legendary German publisher.
