On Our Backs: Entertainment for the Adventurous Lesbian was the first women-run erotica magazine – and the first to feature lesbian erotica for lesbians in America. Founded in San Francisco in 1984, for many it defined the look and politics of lesbian culture in the 80s and played a definitive role in the feminist sex wars of the period, taking the side of sex-positive feminisim. In fact, its very name satiritised Off Our Backs, a long-standing feminist newspaper that published the worlds of many anti-pornography feminist of the time.
