Published on the occasion of the artist’s largest presentation to date at LUMA, Arles in 2022, LIVE EVIL is a richly illustrated, essential monograph surveying the practice of American artist, Arthur Jafa. It brings together key works, archival material, and critical texts to examine Jafa’s sustained, several decade spanning engagement with contemporary Black American life, image culture, and the politics of representation. The book translates Jafa’s time-based practice into a carefully sequenced print format with film stills, installation views, and selected projects reproduced with emphasis on rhythm and juxtaposition, underscoring the artist’s method of constructing meaning through editing and accumulation. Newly commissioned essays and thorough interviews with Jafa offer critical context for his engagement with race, image circulation, and contemporary media culture.
