Hal Fischer's Gay Semiotics: A Photographic Study of Visual Coding Among Homosexual Men is the cult conceptual artist’s book and document of gay life in California in the 1970s. Exploring gay subcultures, codes and signifiers – from handkerchiefs to keys – Fischer’s black and white images and acompnaniying text offer an insight into the scene and sexual preferences of the times. It also features Fischer’s critical essay, which is marked by the same wry, anthropological tone found in the image/text configurations. First published in 1978 by NFS press, a facsimile copy was produced by Cherry and Martin, Los Angeles in 2015 reproducing the look and feel of the original volume. This second edition quickly sold out, and is now scarce.
