A book compiling the best of Newspaper, a cult periodical published by Steve Lawrence and edited with Peter Hujar and Andrew Ullrick in New York City between 1968-1971. A wordless, picture-only periodical that ran for 14 issues and featured work by over 40 artists, including Andy Warhol, Yayoi Kusama, Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon and Paul Thek, Newspaper provided an alternative exhibition space for some of the era’s greatest photographers and queer artists at a time when photography was not being exhibited regularly in galleries. The mid to late sixties was a flourishing period for artists experimenting with new media formats like magazines and books to create or distribute their work, and Newspaper was one of the first artist-published tabloids of its era, preceding Andy Warhol’s Interview, which debuted in 1969.
