Richard Prince
Spiritual America
1st Edition, 1989
Aperture / IVAM
£200
Spiritual America constitutes both a cross-section and an extension of the radical appropriations of popular culture for which Richard Prince is known and lauded. Published in conjunction with a major exhibition at the Institute of Modern Art in Valencia, this volume presents a comprehensive array of Prince’s most significant works—his “fictions,” Ektacolour “rephotographs” of American cowboys, magazine advertisements and celebrities, as well as excerpted writings and a conversation with author J. G. Ballard. In keeping with Prince’s ongoing deconstruction and recontextualization of familiar media, this volume marks a reinvention of the monograph form itself.
