Studio Voice
Vol. 236
August, 1995
£40
The August 1995 special edition issue of Japanese monthly pop culture magazine, Studio Voice. Published as a follow up to the November issue from the previous year dedicated to photographers shaping the visual language of generation X, this issue focuses on the women—both those taking the photographs and being photographed—who were responsible for shaping the identity of Japanese female youth culture during the mid-90s. Features include a story spotlighting the girls from Takashi Homma’s cult Tokyo Teens series, presenting direct, unstyled portraits that influenced how adolescence and urban life in Tokyo was pictured in the 1990s. And spreads devoted to Japanese photographers Hiromix and Yurie Nagashima, who helped trigger the era’s ‘girly photo’ explosion with their more diaristic and personal approach.
