Studio Voice

Vol. 243
March, 1996

£70

A defining, special edition issue of the influential Japanese pop culture magazine, Studio Voice, published in 1996 at the height of the ‘girly photo’ movement. Titled We Love Hiromix, this issue places Hiromix, the young photographer whose raw, snapshot aesthetic came to symbolise a new visual language of female adolescence, at its centre. Her images, direct and unpolished, rejected commercial gloss in favour of intimacy and everyday life, helping to redefine how the identity of Japanese female youth culture was pictured in 1990s Tokyo. This issue also includes photographs from Nobuyoshi Araki and Ellen Von Unwerth, and a text in Japanese where photographer Takashi Homma discusses Hiromix and the creation of her first photo book that catapulted her to fame as a high schooler.
