Not to be confused as a regional printing of the American Playboy, Weekly Playboy has been issued in Japan as an adult men’s magazine since 1966 by Shueisha, a company well-known for publishing manga aimed at teenage boys. Regular issues include manga, news and celebrity interviews amongst nude pictorials of models and actresses. In this special edition, the scandalous yet ever-popular actor, singer and filmmaker Shintaro Katsu cinematically captures his fellow actress, Mieko Harada, as they travel by jet and helicopter across Hawaii’s tropical landscape. Katsu remarks a certain ‘toughness’ needed for shooting in such locations; a toughness that is demonstrated by Harada as she is photographed, under his direction, firing live ammunition from a real machine gun.
