Tokyo Dolls is a scarce book offering a unique insight into the lives of several transgender women residing in Tokyo during the late 1970s. Comprising eight years of intimate portraits taken by documentary photographer Hiromi Tsuchida, the women are captured gazing towards the lens in various colourful settings and states of dress. Tsuchida notes his intention was to document the women as faithfully as possible, stating that he was ‘careful to make them aware of the camera, as if they were looking into a mirror’. The book also includes texts in Japanese about queer life in the country, ending with a conversation between some of the subjects detailing their experiences titled ‘The True Feelings of the Dolls’.
