An original poster issued in conjunction with the 2012 exhibition The Vivisector at Sprüth Magers, London, featuring Cindy Sherman’s 1992 artwork Untitled (#253). Curated by Todd Levin, the exhibition brought together two key bodies of work by Sherman, her Sex Pictures series where the body is examined through mannequins and prosthetics, and Broken Dolls, a later series of black-and-white images depicting dismembered and reassembled figurines. Shown side by side, the exhibition reconsidered the importance of these works to Sherman’s practice, and also placed them in a wider context alongside works by Morton Bartlett, Georges Bataille, Hans Bellmer, Bruce Nauman, and Frederick Sommer, all linked by a shared interest in distorted, artificial, and transgressive representations of the figure. The exhibition’s title refers to the act of cutting open a living organism for study, referencing the themes of exposure and examination of living bodies that are central to Sherman’s practice.
