20 The Exhibition
1st Edition, 2008
MoMu
£200
Published to accompany the exhibition curated by MoMu in Antwerp for Maison Martin Margiela’s 20th anniversary, this book traces two decades of the elusive house’s avant-garde design approach. Founded in 1988, Margiela is renowned for its conceptual approach, radical deconstruction, and deliberate anonymity. Across two decades, Margiela’s work has continually challenged conventional perceptions of fashion, questioning ideas of authenticity, the standardised body, the distinction between high and low fashion, and the role of the designer.
The book includes detailed documentation of garments, sketches, and behind-the-scenes photography, alongside essays that contextualise the label’s radical and enduring influence on contemporary fashion. Designed in close collaboration with Margiela and scenographer Bob Verhelst, the exhibition’s presentation reflects the brand’s iconic labelling system and conceptual rigour, offering a compelling exploration of the house’s lasting impact on contemporary design.
