Girlfriends is a continuation of Richard Prince’s long-standing engagement with appropriation and image culture exploring the artist’s signature terrain of American pop culture vernacular, sexuality, and the blurred lines between personal fantasy and public image. Using low resolution images taken from biker magazines—amateur-style snapshots of women wearing bikinis, lingerie and leather posing on motorcycles—Prince rephotographs and reframes them as purposefully unresolved objects of both fascination and critique. A reflection of a specific kind of Americana—part roadside motel, part teenage bedroom wall, part Xeroxed zine—Girlfriends is a snapshot of how images, especially of women, circulate, mutate, and endure. Originally published in 1993 on the occasion of an exhibition including the works, the book has since become a highly coveted cult object.
