California’s Death Valley is the setting for West by South, a series of photographs by Kishin Shinoyama of the actress Hijiri Kojima. Japanese photographer Shinoyama made his name with photo series depicting women nude in natural and urban landscapes dating back to the 1960s. In West by South, Kojima plays with country and western tropes to produce a cinematic photo book, capturing 23-year-old Kojima against the sparse, moody landscape of Death Valley.
