About a Girl is a diaristic record of Japanese actress and singer Miki Nakatani’s time spent in New York and along the New England coast on the cusp of her twentieth birthday, as photographed by Kyoji Takahashi. Traditionally considered the age at which one reaches adulthood in Japan, the spirit of coming-of-age is captured as candid images of Nakatani in the city riding the subway appear alongside her journey to the coast where she is seen lounging on motel beds in white face makeup and frolicking on the beach in a slipdress, lifting it to dip her toes in the water. American musician Arto Lindsay and Ryuichi Sakamoto of Yellow Magic Orchestra also make cameos, the latter being an important collaborator of Nakatani producing several of her albums, including her return to music after departing her former girl group to focus on her acting career.
